“Farm Boy”

The third issue of Baubles From Bones is now live and includes my short story “Farm Boy.” You can read it online or pick up a digital or print copy from the publishers’ Etsy shop.

“Farm Boy” is my evil overlord story. I am old enough to have witnessed some of the web’s earliest “if I were an evil overlord I would simply not [insert hero-saving foolishness here]” lists, and a few years ago the spouse and I were making jokes about orphans in some book or other and the benefits of strong social services. (If you’re inclined to read the story more seriously, it’s about power and systems and the interplay of actions and intent.)

And so, voilà, my contribution to the subgenre, nearing the upper boundary of flash fiction and very short for a short story, but it eventually found editors who liked it. Hopefully, some of you will like it, too.
