Just finished a reread of Erich Maria Remarque's 'All quiet on the western front'. It really is a phenomenal piece of writing. It is hard though to see it in literary terms because its theme is so urgent. It seems extraordinary to me that we have forgotten what that, and subsequent, generations taught us and we are back to cheering on the slaughter in the name of nation and civilisation.
