Loss of koala habitat shows ‘total failure’ of our nature laws. In 2025 alone, nearly 4,000 ha of essential koala habitat was cleared under federal approvals—the highest annual loss since koalas were first listed in 2012. Since 2011, a staggering 2.3 million hectares of likely koala habitat has been destroyed—with 391,170 ha of that in NSW through native forest logging. Agriculture continues to be the primary driver, and loopholes and weak enforcement mean koalas keep paying the price. Conservationists are calling for real reform of the EPBC Act—including closing native logging exemptions and creating an independent environmental watchdog.

"The Australian government should significantly constrain the use of biodiversity offsets under its environmental law reform agenda and stop them being used for critically endangered wildlife, according to a report by a partnership of 11 universities."

"It recommended that offsets focused on restoring and creating new habitat and so-called “averted loss” offsets – which involve protecting existing habitat – be abolished."
