The name of the designer who recreated Entsū-ji's (円通寺) gardens in the 17thC is unknown, but as it bears a striking similarity to the one at Zakka-in (雑華院 a sub-temple of Myōshin-ji 妙心寺), it is thought to be the work of the monk Gyokuen (玉淵).

🌿PERSIMMON PALACE🌄

Entsū-ji (円通寺) was once surrounded by such an abundance of persimmon trees and azalea bushes that in past times it was nicknamed 'Kaki-no-dera' (柿の寺 the 'Persimmon Temple') and 'Tsutsuji-no-dera' (ツツジの寺 the 'Azalea Temple').

The temple is now better known for its 'borrowed scenery' garden.

A gorgeous spring day at Entsū-ji (円通寺) and the azaleas are in full bloom.

The temple was once surrounded by such an abundance of persimmon trees and azalea bushes that in past times it was nicknamed 'Kaki-no-dera' (柿の寺 the 'Temple of Persimmons') and 'Tsutsuji-no-dera' (ツツジの寺 the 'Temple of Azaleas').

Entsū-ji is now better known for its 'borrowed scenery' garden, incorporating distant Mt Hiei.
