Industrial strategy outlines ‘3Ds’ vision while fighting deindustrialisation rearguard action

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) has released a new Industrial Development Strategy (IDS) “anchored” by the so-called ‘3Ds’ of decarbonisation, diversification and digitalisation, but which also includes actions geared towards stemming the ongoing tide of deindustrialisation in traditional sectors. The 44-page strategy was published on the department’s website on June 8, following its approval by Cabinet on June 3.

Used-car prices holding above 2025 levels; Chinese brands reshaping market value – AutoTrader

South Africa’s used-car market is showing signs of recalibration, rather than a broad-based price decline, says AutoTrader, with new data from the online platform showing that average prices remained higher year-on-year in each of the first four months of 2026. The average price rose from R415 770 in January, 2025, to R430 165 in January this year, from R426 836 to R439 663 in February, from R428 253 to R439 614 in March, and from R430 373 to R433 318 in April.

AVEVA technology playing pivotal role in ensuring Italy’s natural gas supply

Italy’s main operator for transport, storage and regasification of natural gas, Snam, is using industrial software company AVEVA’s supervisory control and data acquisition (Scada) technology system to great effect, to assist with the safe and reliable transport and dispatch of this strategic natural resource for the country. South African green hydrogen first-movers given major boost

Enticing support for first movers into green hydrogen project development is on offer via a first-of-a-kind government-led framework designed to assess the readiness and bankability of green hydrogen and power-to-x (PtX) projects in South Africa. This follows South Africa’s official launch of the PtX project development standard (PDS), which includes green hydrogen and PtX developers being invited to register their projects and complete the PtX PDS questionnaire, with the assurance that all information will be treated as confidential and shared only with authorised partner institutions.

Armscor welcomes African scientists for advanced analytical chemistry programme

The Armaments Corporation of South Africa (Armscor) is hosting 21 scientists from 16 African countries at its Protechnik Laboratories, in Pretoria, Gauteng, from June 8 to 19 for the yearly Analytical Chemistry Course conducted under the auspices of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The specialised training programme forms part of ongoing international efforts to strengthen scientific and technical capabilities among African member States in support of the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

Necsa outlines plans for rejuvenating South Africa’s nuclear sector

The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa), the State-owned company responsible for nuclear research and technology development, as well as the provision of nuclear applications and products, has six high impact programmes aimed at strengthening the country’s nuclear sector and the benefits it provides to the country. “The high impact programmes in our view are a fundamental shift in the Necsa growth strategy that we began implementing on 1 April 2026, focusing on increasing revenue for Necsa and supporting South Africa’s nuclear industry,” highlights Necsa Group CEO Loyiso Tyabashe. “We believe that we built the solid foundation on the back of our turnaround strategy from 2021, that has delivered positive results in financial sustainability, improved operations and governance as well as stability. It should be noted that the six programmes have multiple projects, which will be executed and come on stream over time and beyond the five-year term of the strategy.”

Eskom signs agreement with Zululand Energy Terminal as it seeks to advance 3 GW Richards Bay gas-fired power project

Eskom has signed heads of agreement with Zululand Energy Terminal (ZET) with the intention of becoming the ‘foundation customer’ for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal that ZET intends building at Berth 207 in the South Dunes precinct of the Port of Richards Bay. ZET is a joint venture between Vopak Terminal Durban and Transnet Pipelines, and was selected in 2024 as the preferred bidder to develop, construct and operate a new LNG terminal at the KwaZulu-Natal deepwater port. Vopak Terminal Durban is owned by Royal Vopak, of the Netherlands and the Reatile Group.

Business organisations Business Unity South Africa (Busa) and Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) have, in a joint statement, noted “with concern” the growing tensions and public debate surrounding migration and immigration in South Africa. “At a time of heightened economic pressures, unemployment, high crime levels and social challenges, it is understandable that citizens seek solutions to legitimate concerns regarding economic inclusion, service delivery, border management and the rule of law,” they say.
