FBI says hackers are sending fraudulent police data requests to tech giants to steal people’s private information

The FBI is warning that hackers are obtaining private user information — including emails and phone numbers — from U.S.-based tech companies by compromising government and police email addresses to submit “emergency” data requests.

The warning is a rare admission from the FBI about the threat from fake emergency data requests submitted by hackers with access to police email accounts.

Many of these #subpoenas came in the form of so-called #EmergencyDataRequests —a mechanism #hackers have lately gotten into the habit of abusing to vacuum up #data from #technology cos outside of usual #review processes. Apparently, these requests were often approved w/in hours.
