Die meisten #Buergergeldempfaenger
bekommen so wenig Geld von unsozialen "Unternehmen" ausgezahlt, dass das Einkommen aufgestockt werden muss. 🤮

Kosmos 482 Descent Craft reentry forecasts [PERIODICALLY UPDATED]

classified military Space (spy satellites) and Missiles

Incoming!

A soviet spacecraft that was launched in 1972 is forecast for an uncontrolled re-entry likely on May 9th or 10th, 2025.

The Kosmos 482 descent craft is the lander module from a failed Soviet Venera mission to the planet Venus.

Its landing module, weighs in at 495 kg and is highly likely to reach the surface of Earth in one piece as it was designed to withstand 300 G’s of acceleration and 100 atmospheres of pressure.

#DuckandCover ist kurzweilig und daher lasse ich mich auch mal dazu überreden.
Obwohl ich grundsätzlich gerne mal ein Stichspiel auf den Tisch bringe, erschließt sich mir der Reiz an #Fischen nicht. Kenne zumindest kein vergleichbares Spiel. #Brettspiele

Kosmos 482 Descent Craft reentry forecasts [PERIODICALLY UPDATED]

classified military Space (spy satellites) and Missiles

@PaulHammond51 woaaa, that's a half a ton!
@KasTasMykolas It potentially could be a little heavier if any of the remaining 'Vernera Bus' is still attached, but that 'Bus' will likely burn up during reentry....
@PaulHammond51 after quick googling at least it does not seem to be carrying any nuclear waste, like... Kosmos 954 did. Even no propulsion system? o_0
@PaulHammond51 Whoops, that has the potential of causing some serious damage.

@PaulHammond51 Wouldn't it be ironic if it landed on Red Square right as their VE parade was happening?

Can't happen though as Moscow is too far north for the orbit to reach over it.

@derickr

Looks unlikely with the available data :)

It all depend on the space weather in the next days, that can tweak its atmospheric entry point.

@PaulHammond51

What a waste, it should have been salvaged and exhibited in a museum. Instead, we let it crash and resources are wasted on space tourism. 🤒

@stekopf @PaulHammond51
“It belongs in a museum.”
@stekopf @PaulHammond51 you are aware that somehow salvaging this would lead to more garbage in space and would probably cost more than exhibiting this would ever bring in?

@pascaldragon

Ideally a rescue would have been part of a larger mission to remove multiple dead satellites and spacecraft remnants from the orbit - reducing the impact for a single object.

Indeed, I don't see profitability as a precondition for rescuing artifacts of human science or culture.

@PaulHammond51

@stekopf @pascaldragon

Agreed: During my lifetime near earth space has become an over-crowded place, with no sign of it slowing down. So I hope that the space fairing nations of our planet will take joint action to de-orbit all of the dead satellites and other orbital debris. If left in orbit the risk of costly collisions increases dramatically that will only increase debris, and could make low earth orbit a no-go zone for many missions.

@PaulHammond51 how much will the #tariff cost on one of these?
@mister914
I'm assuming it would be astronomical 🚀
@PaulHammond51 @mister914 It’s a Russian export so it is exempt.
@maccruiskeen @PaulHammond51 good to know. I hope it doesn't hit my shed!

@PaulHammond51

This story about "Retro Space Debris" is maybe a welcome distraction for @sundogplanets from the contemporary #SpaceDebris

@OskarImKeller @PaulHammond51 It might be "retro" in design, but the debris that will make it to the ground is very NOW.

@sundogplanets @PaulHammond51

Yes, it is indeed. And scary if it will really come down in one piece.

@PaulHammond51 I know a place in Florida where it could crash.

@ThePolishDispatch @PaulHammond51
I hope not. Not as long as he has the launch codes.

Now, if a Soviet spacecraft managed to take out Putin, that would be entirely different. Both because the risk of Russia retaliating by nuking Moscow is miniscule, but even if they do, so what😆

@leeloo @ThePolishDispatch @PaulHammond51 Also, what a spectacular piece of poetic justice it would be!
@ThePolishDispatch @PaulHammond51 I have a short list of places that it might actually do some good if it landed.
@PaulHammond51
Das hätte ich gerne als wohnzimmerdeko.
Kann man das irgendwo ersteigern?
Natürlich inklusive Versand.

@sebiturbo

If I recall correctly, there's a treaty that places ownership of such debris with the folk that launched it. However, the Soviets denied that parts of this craft were theirs back in the day, those parts had landed in New Zealand, so they were claimed by a local farmer as they landed in one of his fields. So you might get lucky and see elements of it on the market :)

@PaulHammond51
Coincidentally, May 10, the day Russian space probe Kosmos 482 may crash to Earth, is also the day the last scheduled container ship from China will dock on the US West Coast.
Coincidence? Sign of the end times?
@Guillotine_Jones @PaulHammond51 the sign of the end times will be if the re-entry vehicle HITS the last container ship before it docks 😆
@PaulHammond51 Impressive scientific analysis in the Substack article that you provided a link to...will be interesting to see where (and how) this 1972 Soviet lander ends up falling and landing on earth.
@PaulHammond51 Isn't this how the film 'Shaun of the dead' begins?
@PaulHammond51 I can imagine my home insurance company: “Not a covered hazard”. Russia: not our spacecraft, belonged to the USSR. Hopefully it lands in the water or an empty desert somewhere.
@PaulHammond51 They built things to last back then

@PaulHammond51

World’s largest game of Russian Roulette.

@andrewfeeney

Also like playing Russian roulette with a Luger rather than a revolver. One bullet, one chamber!

@PaulHammond51 It would be extremely funny if it fell onto that same New Zealand farmer's field.
@PaulHammond51 Queuing up Devo's "Space Junk."
@PaulHammond51
Uncontrolled re-entry = crash, in regular-speak, Paul.
