I understand. Felt the same way. I don't know if this will help, but Fred Saberhagen wrote a GREAT take on Stoker's "Dracula", a retelling of the story from Dracula's point of view. It's called "The Dracula Tape" (1975), and it's the first book in a series. Some of the later books didn't work well for me, but the immediate sequel, "The Holmes-Dracula File" (1978) is really well-written and funny, too. Both are much more readable than the original!
Unfortunately Saberhagen's take on Frankenstein was nowhere near as good. I wouldn't particularly recommend that one.
