Prolific on and off Broadway from the 1960s, he became a valuable supporting player for major directors including Bob Rafelson (The Postman Always Rings Twice, 1981) and Warren Beatty (Bugsy, 1991), portrayed Einstein for William Castle (Shanks, 1974) and often remembered for a great comic turn as Ernie, the mortician in The Return of the Living Dead (1985).
