For the 50th anniversary of D&D, i'll share a hot take: calling Dungeons and Dragons a role playing game is a mismomer. Examine when roleplaying happens in D&D, when the story-altering creative choices that alter the plot are taken. The majority of those moments are not governed by the rules of the game. Therefore, whenever you are roleplaying your character, most likely you are not playing D&D. D&D can be best described as a very detailed miniature wargame.
