"I'm sorry, the Distortion is *what*?" Ezra says.

Moses sighs.

"Stealing people's teeth. Only the healthy ones, if that one report is correct."
"I don't want to lose my teeth..." Ezra whines.
"So far it has avoided fighting. You could probably overpower it."

(Once all is said and done, Moses sits with a disillusioned dentist who has seen too many clients turn to prosthetics rather than take care of their birth body. But... not everyone.)

Moses is glad she got Ezra *out*.

(Truth be told, she's glad and still a bit dazed that she got out herself. Captain of the Udjat, devoted servant to Dias... it's not a position that's easy to escape.)

But some evenings turning into nights, she thinks of all the others. Those who are still fighting in Dias' name. The vast majority of her former subordinates.

Did she fail them by leaving?

Did she have a choice?

It's been long enough now that Moses isn't surprised anymore at how the mind can express itself through Distortion. Shape, color, matter, smell, space... Everything humans can perceive has meaning for someone, somewhere.

Never two minds alike, but patterns all the same.

(What still surprises her is how she's able to keep up the facade of not feeling the very physical effects burgeoning Distortions have on her.)

Getting her own Office is surprisingly easy.

Moses wasn't expecting it to be insurmountable, but it feels like she blinked and everything is already dealt with. Forms filled and sent, authorizations obtained, registration process complete.

(Were things always that simple outside of the war?)

She should focus on finding clients. Cases await her gaze.

To the eyes of everyone but me, Distortion is a brutal and sudden process, a human body turning into something radically different in barely a few seconds.

As for me, I'm witness to a stretched out phenomenon. The change comes in layer after layer, some less subtle than others but still separated by hours if not days or weeks. A gradual mutation that just happens to collapse into the visible spectrum all at once.
