‘They have you over a barrel’: how scammers, touts and bots took over driving tests

It can take you six months to get a driving test in England – unless you’re willing to pay a middleman up to £350. What’s behind this black market? And is there any way to avoid it?

Europe's data protection laws cut data storage by making information-wrangling pricier

GDPR also slashed processing costs by over a quarter

The LIBE committee of the European Parliament has written to the Commission with concerns that the UK’s new data protection bill will impact on the U.K. This is a big intervention from the European Parliament around the UKs plans to water down data rights https://www.openrightsgroup.org/publications/8-march-2024-letter-to-commissioner-reynders-from-libe-committee-chair-dpdi-bill/ #DataProtecion #privacy #EU #DPDIBill

And this *might* mean that identification is possible from multiple angles and - potentially - to a higher degree of accuracy than with other data sources. TBC.

The DVLA’s privacy notice doesn’t list the data types they process in any real detail. The relevant item for these purposes is merely “visual images”.

There is room for improvement here - I want to see a full list of detailed data types and the purposes for which each is processed.

Facial recognition using the DVLA database seems like an invasive step with unproven benefits.

The DVlA and the Passport office both capture images for renewals using a smartphone, which is quick and convenient for everyone.

But I *think* (it’s been a while since I used the system) they require a video to prove you’re alive and the person to whom the records apply. That also helps #FacialRecognition systems (if they keep the files).

This is another article (linking to an excellent report) explaining just how rubbish the Irish #DPC is.

In fact the main obstacle to #EU wide enforcement of the #GDPR is the Irish DPC. This is embarrassing and utterly unacceptable.

Ireland remains ‘enforcement bottleneck’ for GDPR

Ireland is continuing to act as an "enforcement bottleneck" for the GDPR, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) has said. In a new report published today, ICCL said Ireland's Data Protection Commission (DPC) is failing to enforce the GDPR against Big Tech despite an increase in resources.
