Sometimes I am just a hat rack.

A while back we got fibre to the home, converting from old DSL technology which worked well enough for our needs.

And, yes Gens A thru Z, this boomer had a landline. And of course connected to a phone on the landline RJ11 was a DSL filter.

For nearly 2 years I had heard a hum on that phone. Dutifully saw the filter and ignored it. Figuring there was ground in the house somewhere.

This evening, while dusting, the WTAF moment hit me.

Removed the filter. No Noise

I made a real #dumb first-world mistake and double booked next Thursday with both @orangecon and a really cool 2-day #socialengineering training with @marcelvandervelde despite both dates being known last year at time of booking. So it seems I'll be missing #orangecon2026 after all 😭.

But luckily this weekend we also have @tdose, so still some chances to see people there!
