So, somewhat incidentally, I can contribute to the theme that @MaddyWaves is doing for #VGMWednesday whilst also keeping to my theme of games I have been playing recently.
#Doom64 really shifted things in terms of tone and ambience. The game is much darker, even with the brightness cranked up. The soundtrack is definitely a major factor to this. If you compare E1M1 Hangar to Map 1 Staging Area, gone is the epic midi shreds, and all you have is a sense of dread of unease.
Perhaps I am cheating a little as this is more ambience than music... but it certainly hit the creepy themeing. There are no bangers here in Doom 64, but there are some... Questionable moments. Certain background sounds really get inside your brain and make you feel a bit disorientated. Like, what the heck are you doing to my ears?!
I much prefer the original #DOOM soundtrack, but I don't think Doom 64 would be the same if it tried to copy the original style.
Rip and tear.
Until it is done.
So, all being well and good, I aim to have #Doom64 knocked out tonight. I have about 8 stages to clear on Watch Me Die, which should be manageable.
But then I look at my #DOOM clears.
3DO, 32X, and Atari Jaguar DOOM are beaten, not mastered. The first two should be pretty manageable. Though 100% kills, secrets AND items is a little annoying for the 32X version. Graciously, there are only 15 stages.
But Atari Jaguar DOOM is a misery to play when you consider #RetroAchievements All emulators for it have some kind of issue. Bizhawk works "best," but it feels like you are playing using Fast Monsters, and your fire rate seems to be half what you are used to. It's why it took me 6 months to get through... Though I did elect additional suffering with grabbing as many pistol starts as I could...
If I can master SNES DOOM, I should be able to do this!
