Jessica Howard and The Art of Lithomancy – Ep. 10

Jessica Howard is an author and an expert on lithomancy — a form of divination that uses stones, crystals, or other small objects to gain insight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjFJw2Z0xUw

In this episode, Jessica talks about her book, The Art of Lithomancy, answers all of my questions, and even walks me through an entire reading. You might as well just consider this a crash course in divination.

Alright — here’s how it works, folks: This article is just written highlights of an hour-long conversation. If you want the full scoop, you should watch the episode on YouTube. If you’d prefer to keep things light and quick, then read on!

Background

Jessica has been a practicing pagan for about 25 years. She says she was the type of kid who was always practicing spells or mixing potions in the garden, but eventually realized that all of this sort of stuff had a name: Wicca. In her book, she writes that her path is highly eclectic, with influences from Water Witchcraft, Kitchen Witchcraft, Celtic Witchcraft, and Green Witchcraft. What a mix!

Today, Jessica is based in the UK — she lives in London right by the Thames. And as a personal note, I think it’s really cool how this show is starting to connect me with people on an international level.

Writing has always been one of Jessica’s passions. When faced with excessive amounts of downtime during COVID, she decided to turned that passion into a book. Lithomancy was a topic that had interested her for years, but there was surprisingly little information about it!

The Art of Lithomancy

Pagan Portals: The Art of Lithomancy tells you exactly what you need to know in order to get started with your own lithomancy practice. It’s a very straight-forward and easy-to-read book.

Inside, you will find information on what types of objects you can choose, how to prepare them (and yourself) for a reading, how to perform an actual reading for yourself (or others), and more.

There’s no fluff in this book. And best of all? There’s really not a whole lot of rules, either. You’re given almost complete freedom to take chances, make mistakes, and get messy…. then learn from it!

It doesn’t matter if this is your very first divination method or if it’s your 100th, there’s something for everyone in this book. The information truly starts at zero, making this particular form of study accessible to all.

Finally, in addition to some handy keyword lists, there’s also an entire walkthrough of a sample reading. I love sample readings, by the way, because you get to see inside someone else’s thought process — more on this later.

The Pagan Portals series by Moon Books contains many other interesting topics. Give it a look if you need something new to read!

How to Choose a Set

In a more “traditional” sense, lithomancy interprets the casting of stones. Modern sets, however, might also include things like coins, seashells, or other small charms.

What, exactly, should you choose for your set? And what should each item represent? Jessica goes over all this information in the interview, but you’re really only limited by your imagination. She said there’s no wrong way to do lithomancy, provided of course that you follow a few common sense considerations… like not throwing an item that will break or one that is so small that you’ll lose track of it. As some further guidance, she also said it’s helpful if everything is roughly the same size and weight.

You could make a simple set that answers yes/no questions with just two stones… or something more complicated that has items to represent astrological correspondences. These are both detailed in the book. When I asked her about her own sets, she listed many different variations. She’s even working on developing a “Lord of the Rings” themed set where each stone represents a particular character. Fantasy meets divination? I love it.

One thing I found really interesting is how the physical characteristics of a stone can help you decide what role it plays in your set and what message it brings in a reading. For instance, a stone that has cracks or rough edges might convey something different than one that is smooth all around.

Giving a Reading

The simplest way to give a lithomancy reading is to just hold your stones in your hand and let them fall gently in front of you, either on the floor or on a table. From here, you look at how they have fallen. What stones are closest to you? What stones are furthest away? Are there groups? Are there shapes? These are just a few logical questions you can ask and answer. And with experience, those answers can give you a general vibe of what’s going on almost instantly.

That’s all great advice and everything, but do you know what’s even better? Watching someone give a reading! Truly a great way to learn.

About halfway through the interview, Jessica walks the camera to her living room space, sets it on the floor, and throws her stones in front of it. She verbally explains every step of the way. With her guidance, lithomancy sounds so simple! But it can give you very deep information.

For the first half of the reading, Jessica uses a grid — it’s just a small circle that she cut out of paper, then divided into sections like Career, Health, Wealth, and Love. This helps guide the message. For the second half of the reading, she removed the grid and looked for clarification on a certain issue that was revealed.

Grids are fairly common in divination methods where things are thrown or cast. It’s kind of like having a map. Jessica’s grid is unique, however, because it is decorated with sigils that she designed to represent each section of energy. Very cool!

General Reading Set

After the reading was finished, Jessica explained the meaning behind each object.

  • Lodestone – personal stone
  • Coin – abundance and wealth
  • Obsidian – protection
  • Tigers Eye – opportunity
  • Seaglass – message
  • Blue Lace Agate – communication
  • Amethyst – intuition
  • Pebble – selflessness
  • Seashell – emotional ending
  • Aventurine – relationships

This is her “general reading” set — it’s one of the first sets that she put together and she’s been using it for years. This can give you a good outline of what types of things you could include and what types of meanings they might hold. Of course, it’s just a guide! The real best way would be to start experimenting for yourself and see what works best for you.

Meditations to Soothe The Soul

At the time of writing this article, there’s also a pre-order available for a new book, Energy Healing for Modern Life, which is due for release March 2026.

Singing Bowls

To add a little bit of music to her practice, Jessica says she’s regularly playing singing bowls. Want to hear what she uses them for? Well… watch the interview!

Side Note: if you want to learn more about singing bowls, check out my article dedicated to the subject.

Other than that, she’s also been known to put some music on in the background for meditation or to write a short piece on guitar to dedicate to a deity. Again, watch the full episode to hear more!

Don’t miss out. Here’s what’s coming up…

Conclusions

This was such a fun interview. I love learning new divination methods… and I also love watching people demonstrate them! Ever since my conversation with Jessica, I’ve been setting small objects aside that I might use for my own “general reading” lithomancy set. So far I have a big seed (commonly called “Deer’s Eye”) and a crystal. I’ll probably include some other stones, possibly some sort of bone, and a coin. Maybe I’ll throw a die in there, too. Honestly, I have no idea. I’m not in any rush and I’m letting things slowly call to me. When I finish, you can bet that I’ll be writing about it!

This was my 29th episode of M3. That means next time we’ll be hitting a nice, round number of 30! I’ll just say it again — it’s really cool that I’m connecting to people on other continents now. Who will my next guests be? Well… you’ll just have to wait and see. More will be revealed.

To make sure you get the latest updates, please head over to my YouTube channel, @AerikArkadian, and hit the subscribe button. I’ll have more videos coming out soon! Stay tuned for more.

Hey! Thanks for making it all the way down here. Actually, since you’re here, can you please give me a hand? I think I dropped one of my lithomancy stones behind the couch. See if you can reach back there and grab it? Oh, and by the way, you’ll notice there are some Amazon links on this page. Those are referral links. If you use one of them to make a purchase, Amazon will pay me a tiny commission. Did you get the stone yet? What do you mean you can’t find it? No, seriously, I definitely heard it fall back there.

#MIDGARD #MIDGARD3 #M3 #WeltDerAbenteuer #KLEESpiele #pnpde #MIDGARDKodex #FantasyRollenspiel"
