The Justice Department has sued to block new congressional district boundaries approved by California voters, joining a legal battle that could determine which party wins control of the U.S. House in 2026. The complaint filed in California federal court Thursday targets the new congressional map pushed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in response to a similar Republican-led effort in Texas backed by President Donald Trump. The Department of Justice has officially abandoned its prosecution of Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, two of the co-defendants, who conspired obstruct justice, in Donald Trump's classified documents case in Florida. In a new, short, one page filing with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, the Department of Justice moved to voluntarily dismiss its appeal with prejudice, meaning it could not be refiled again.
