Got some upgrades for my #Csepel #foldingBike
It rides sooo much better with the new wheels and the Shimano hub shifter, and it has brakes to match its increased speed.
Only downside is that the new handlebars can't be folded, but at least they also don't collapse mid-ride like the old ones.

Welp, I'm officially giving up on the #Csepel Csillag as a #foldingBike. The handlebar is just impossible to secure properly, it moves even if I just go off a ledge at a low speed. There is no way to fix it without making it harder to fold, at which point I might as well just get another bike. So that's what I'm doing, hopefully tomorrow. If all goes well I will immediately take it on a train ride.
(I'll still fix the Csepel so my family can use it.)

Ugh, I have some ideas on how to improve my #Csepel #foldingBike, but I don't think I can do anything for its biggest problem, which is that the folding mechanism itself is too cumbersome. I can probably add something so it stays folded, the bad brakes and worn out rear hub I can replace, but I can't make the handlebars fold quicker or smaller. But it does have one big advantage over other folding bikes I'm looking into buying: it is incredibly cheap and easily replaced if stolen.
Here is a video of my #foldingBike being folded up. I'm starting to notice the flaws with the handlebar design. Still, if you are not in a hurry, these #Csepel #bike s are a nice low cost solution to #multiModal travel. (At least in #Hungary, where they are abundant on the second hand market.)
I will be getting new front and rear brakes for it though, because I almost got run over because I couldn't stop in time, that 2-3 meters makes a big difference.

Budapest, 1966. A moment in time, a glance, captured on the suburban train that goes to and from the island of Csepel on the southern outskirts of Budapest.

Csepel was a staunchly working class part of the the capital and is as far from the tourist image of Budapest as you can get. That suburban train still goes back and forth to and from Csepel everyday just as in this photo.
