I only do religion if there's a secular seasonal folk custom attached, but I'm reliably informed today is St Guthlac's day so, in the spirit of the Kipper family of East Anglia, I offer you a new lyric based on the saint's legend. All it needs now is a tune and a begging custom conveniently recalled from childhood by an elderly local (after being bribed with a few pints).
St Guthlac's Day Fauxk Song, collected in Herefordshire in 2023
We are St Guthlac's knights, and strong,
Hate British pandemonium,
We vanquish archaeology,
And drink bog water for our tea.
From Peakirk into Croyland go
Just like St Pega to her bro.
She placed his body in a vault,
Made miracles with a pinch of salt.
But all we need's a drop of malt,
Yes, all we need's a drop of malt.

This worn figure that sits on one of the steps of Trinity Bridge in Crowland is thought to be that of either Christ or King Ethelbald. Also, it is thought that he originally resided on the west front of the village's famous abbey.
When I looked at him I wondered how many people he had seen pass beneath him in all those past centuries. I also thought, if he could talk, I would ask him if he knew who wrote the libelous entry in the Crowland Chronicle about Richard III.

It's actually pretty scary climbing the almost non existent steps to the top of Trinity Bridge in Crowland. It’s even more terrifying climbing down.
Perhaps next time we’ll go on a sunny day when I’m not afraid of slipping on soggy moss and breaking my leg.

Another wet day in the fenlands of Lincolnshire.
Trinity Bridge in Crowland is a 14th century triangular bridge that was built to cross the confluence of the River Nene and the Welland.
I have yet to discover where the water went after the two rivers joined 🤷♀️
