For #StLucysDay a detail of #Crivelli’s Saints Anthony Abbot & Lucy, c. 1470.
St Lucy holds her own eyes before her, an attribute variously associated with the brutality of her martyrdom or an act of self mutilation to dissuade a suitor.
The Scandinavian tradition of wearing a crown of light on her feast day connects to a different story, in which she wore a wreath of candles to carry supplies to Roman Christians hiding in the catacombs.
