OK, so who wants a little tale of corporate incompetence and the loss of business?
I don't hear anyone saying 'No'
So here we go.
Let's tell you about a store in the UK called Oakfurnitureland.
Guess what they sell... go on, guess.
So we are in need of some furniture for the house. I wanted some nice recliner armchairs for my office and cinema room. My mum wanted a new 3 piece suite for the lounge, plus a tv unit to match some other stuff she bought years ago and they still sell.
Total order was around £5000+ mark, and we were going to do it on 3yrs interest free credit.
It was supposed to be delivered next Tuesday.
A few hrs ago, I got a text telling me the order was delayed... No details, told me to check my account... we don't have an account as we ordered it all in store... their store 30 miles away.
So I called them to find out what was going on. Turned out 1 piece of the order was delayed until January... due to 'the middle east conflict'
I take that to mean they're getting this stuff made in some middle east or far east sweatshop and shipping over here to sell at vastly inflated prices.
They 'offered' to split the order at no extra delivery charge to us... My... how GENEROUS and CONSIDERATE of them.
All they wanted us to do, was reply to an email saying it was OK for the finance to start after delivering more than 75% of the order.
I wanted a condition added and agreed in writing. The condition was simple.
That the rest of the order was delivered as agreed next week, and that we could cancel the missing piece of the order if we chose to before it was delivered.
I asked for them to agree to that in writing, that it wasn't negotiable and failure to agree to a very simple request... would mean I cancel the entire order.
They decided they weren't even going to acknowledge that reply to their email, instead getting the salesman in the store to call me and say I needed to remove that condition and reply to the email as they requested.
I said no.
I did reply to their email again though. To inform them that the entire £5000+ order was being cancelled due to their failure to be able to deliver the order as requested on the agreed delivery date.
It's worth noting that the 'missing' item in the order was worth £149.
They are happy to lose over £5000 in business because they don't want to lose a £149 order. Or that they cannot deliver any of it on the agreed date.
Because you know exactly what they would try to do... if I agreed to the finance starting with an incomplete order. They'd either keep delaying the delivery of the missing item, or they'd refuse to cancel it because 'you've already signed and agreed to the finance deal'.
I know they'd do this... because they're a greedy capitalist company who puts profits over common sense. A company who's own systems are so inadequate they are unable to deal with simple logistical problems that may arise and have a culture and structure that is so inflexible, no one is allowed to apply common sense and reason to any task that may diverge from the corporate script of PROFIT, PROFIT, PROFIT.
My mum is disappointed, she was hoping to have some new furniture for xmas. But as I pointed out, even if she wanted to wait and have her side of the order delivered late... I was cancelling my part of the order because I have a zero tolerance towards company bullshit like this. So cancelling my part of the order... actually cancels the entire finance agreement.... she could agree to a new deal... but they've put their prices up and she'd have to accept a 10-20% increase... and she'd have to travel 30 miles each way to do so, when she doesn't drive and I wouldn't let her get screwed over like that.
As usual... I'll get the blame for it... because her convenience is more important... even more important than getting screwed over financially. All she can see is 'no furniture' not... hey, they're trying to screw you over for hundreds of pounds here.... just so you can have your new bit of shiny a little quicker.
Started a new job this week, part-time tutoring/teaching HS students who cannot attend school for any reason.
The school-provided Acer laptop is a cluster of MS past, present, and future. The tech dude couldn't even get Outlook to load, so I'm stuck w/ web access to my email.
Been a public school teacher on and off since 1992, certified in three states, surfing the Internet in School wave since 2002. Only the first of four schools I worked had a teacher deciding what software to subject his fellow teachers to.
MS continues to make bank on unsuspecting school districts.
This delightful (not a word I throw around) thread demonstrates the company's products' craven awareness of its own enshittification.

So, spent most of the day clearing snow with a forklift. Keep in mind that I work for a place that builds tractors and live in a place where it snows every winter. Been asking for a tractor for years. Nope.
Of course the union side has a tractor. Not really suitable for everything we need to do there, since it lacks a 3 point hitch. but plenty good enough for clearing snow.
Only the tractor boy is allowed to use it though. He mostly doesn't.
