Giant tortoises reclaim Floreana Island in Galápagos after more than 150 years

Giant tortoises have returned to Floreana Island in Ecuador's Galapagos archipelago as conservationists release 158 juvenile hybrids to restore the ecosystem. On Friday, the 8- to 13-year-old tortoises started roaming their new habitat as the first winter rains arrive. Fredy Villalba of the Galápagos National Park says the juveniles are big enough to fend off rats and cats. Officials plan a gradual release of 700 tortoises. Christian Sevilla, director of ecosystems of the Galapagos National Park, says the animals carry 40% to 80% of the genes of the Floreana giant tortoise. Scientists trace their lineage to Wolf Volcano on Isabela Island.

Great news! The NSW government is converting two massive cattle stations, Corinya and Tasman, into national parks, protecting 71,000 hectares of unique Outback landscape.

· Major Conservation: The move permanently safeguards vital habitats in previously underrepresented bioregions and protects at least 11 bird species.
· Cultural Protection: The area is rich in Aboriginal cultural heritage, with artefacts and art sites now preserved for future generations.
· Community Benefit: New visitor facilities will boost nature-based tourism, diversifying the local economy that already sees millions from park visitors.

This is a significant win for biodiversity, cultural heritage, and regional communities.

Bumper whale calving season a ‘sign of hope’ for South Australia’s oceans

Almost 200 endangered southern right wales have been spotted off state’s coastline this year, amid concerns about impact of algal bloom

The Guardian

The rise from near extinction to flourishing populations of humpbacks and right whales, nature's colossal intellects, are testaments to the resilience of life.

Humpbacks in the western Indian Ocean have grown from around six hundred to 36,000. Populations off both east and west coasts of Australia passed 50 percent of their pre-exploitation levels in 2015, with growth rates of more than ten percent a year. 🐋🌎💙
