> That in damaging the land and contaminating the air we were harming the people. Of course I'd known that forever – since the dense smog of Los Angeles, since partly dispelled by good legislation and industrial decline – was a presence in my youth. But it hit me with a vividness that was new.

> Almost all of us use devices every day that link us to platforms that have become our primary means of communication – where we learn the news, connect with each other and plan every aspect of our personal, professional and political lives. And every one of those devices and platforms are owned and operated by men who dined at the White House just six weeks ago and lavished the President with praise.

"In June 15, 2003, LGBTQ activist and labor organizer Cleve Jones (with hand raised) and colleagues unfurled a 1.25 mile-long “Sea-to-Sea” flag in Key West, Florida, for the 25th Anniversary of the rainbow flag stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. The flag was created by Gilbert Baker, the original creator of the rainbow flag, and a team of volunteers. Photo courtesy of Mick Hicks. I just finished listening to the audiobook when we rise by Cleve Jones and I was blown away by it.

I strongly recommend it for anyone who wants to understand better and important part of us American history, namely the struggle for equality and justice by the LGBTQ community from the 1970s through the present. It is astonishing to me how much that the author saw and experienced including his experiences working for Harvey milk before his assassination, later his work in California state government, later on his role in starting the movement to create the AIDS memorial quilt, and finally his role and his perspective on the struggles for marriage equality. And a long the way, there is so much to tell about queer life in San Francisco at such a key point in history.

P..S. I also just discovered that there is a mini series by the same name (inspired by the book) on Hulu!
