Registered for the next @fediforum online UNConference in October! Hope to see you there.

Also just reviewed @cyberlyra 's talk from #fedicon #fedicon2025 last week - I highly recommend this one. It's not a product or demo talk or a how-to, it's a great WHY to on the topic of getting ourselves un-captured from corporate technopolies. August is #chuckZuck month, for those trying to exit the Meta properties.

Give it a listen.

@arstechnica We don't have to tolerate this.

We can #ChuckZuck instead! If you are tired of seeing stories about Big Tech abusing our data, why not take the plunge by deleting a Meta account? Together we can #ReclaimTech and #ReclaimControl

@TheBulletin I said yes to #ChuckZuck just last week. Abandoned my FB account years ago but it was continuing to hurt me because by design it was still implying to friends that I was there, implying I was ignoring them. Setting it inactive wasn't enough. What was holding me back from full quit was how to say goodbye. I felt like ranting, but wisdom told me to remember these are friends trying to be friendly. Ended up posting this Bye Bye Facebook blog post on my own site, posting a link to it on FB, then after only half an hour pressing Delete Account. Feels right and good. https://wrily.foad.me.uk/bye-bye-facebook

How's it going?

Anyone thinking about making a move to delete an unused Meta account as part of #ChuckZuck?

Or maybe you still have a Facebook account that you actively use?

What would it take for you to be able to move away from it?

What's one thing you could do today to move toward that goal?

Let's #ReclaimControl together!

I'm glad to hear of this #ChuckZuck effort to get people to leave Facebook.

Being on there makes them more money. It doesn't matter if you use a fake name, rarely post, or don't upload pictures. You are still making them richer and giving them more power.

So I applaud those who have cut the cord with Meta and are encouraging others to do the same.

This is the way. Collectively, we could put Facebook in their place. It wouldn't even cost you any money to pitch in and do your part.

Unfortunately I am not quite ready to delete my Facebook account for #ChuckZuck. I have some emotional, psychological, and social factors that have kept me tied to the account as it is the only source of communication for three groups of people I want and need to keep in touch with. However, I rarely post or add photos to my personal account.

One of my three groups who is hobby/events and focused have started a discord server so at least I have another option to communicate with them.

I know that my experience deleting an inactive account is not representative of the majority of the 2.4 billion monthly active users of Instagram as it's the fourth most visited website in the world. But it made sense to me to start with the easy one first. Build some feelings of success so that tackling an account that I am more attached to, such as Facebook isn't such a big leap as I already have momentum.

Step one towards #ChuckZuck is complete, stay tuned for my Facebook journey.

I took the plunge today and deleted my inactive Instagram account for #ChuckZuck. It was an easy process as I only had 4 posts since I opened an account in 2017. I started by deleting those posts and refusing a bunch of follower requests notifications. I didn't bother to download my data, but that option is available. Then I answered a series of questions to confirm I wanted deletion instead of deactivation. I was certain and so my account and profile will be deleted on August 31st.

The Tech Reclaimers campaign this month is #ChuckZuck. Possible activities are to use the day not to engage in your Facebook and/or Instagram accounts. Or if you are ready to take the plunge, you can delete an account. @ali will be posting her experience deleting an inactive Instagram Account as well as her struggles letting go of her Facebook account. We’d love to hear what your activity might be or if you’ve gotten rid of these accounts already tell us what it was like for you.
