Alexander Maclaren, Baptist minister, and bible commentator, writes on story of Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). The depth of your faith is suspect if you ignore the cry of the poor. But while the passage talks of hell for the rich man here, Maclaren invokes a natural law argument. If you ignore typhus and cholera, your own family may fall ill.

Can we look out for the suffering around us, and not just wall ourselves off from them?
