Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones are often cited as the main influences on Cui Jian, who is called the "father of Chinese rock". However, it is the Talking Heads and the Clash that must have had the greatest impact, especially in his early performances. We have to agree that he is the first post-punk musician in China.

Chengdu-based alternative rockers Riot In School have recently released their second album, "//Punk Rock Blasphemy". This latest offering represents a confluence of ambition, ideals and passion, and is definitely worth supporting. The debut album was produced by Yang Haisong and released by Maybe Mars. This time, however, the band have decided to release it on their own label, Youthquake.

Although there are many mixed-gender groups, the rock scene is still male-dominated. Now we are trying to showcase a number of bands that have a strong feminist stance, in the vein of Riot Grrrl. Each band has an individual voice and would be role models for those facing marginalisation. Cover: 属梨Rats&Pears

Here's a playlist of Chinese indie bands that formed in the 2020s. The list is still small at the moment, but we'll be adding to it in the future.

Several active musicians talk about the current state of the Chinese shoegaze scene and their personal experiences. This should be a good starting point for understanding southern indie rock.

Guangzhou's 乔迁日 Jo's Moving Day, now disbanded, should be regarded as IFTYAY's predecessor. Their only album is considered a masterpiece of not only the shoegaze scene but Chinese indie rock of the 2020s (for me). Their style has been described as "emogaze", but the distinction between this and conventional style may require further explanation.
