The version of Nobody I saw btw. It has long stretches of silence - probably OST that's been been cut out to avoid copyright strikes. This works weirdly well for the scenes. I can't say they get better since I haven't seen the original, but it isn't a hamper.
It's a touching story of four yaos impersonating Tangzan, Sun Wukong etc, to fetch the holy scriptures before them. You won't regret watching this one.

Looks like 'it's not medicine if it doesn't taste bitter' is a thing in China too. This is one of several expressions Sun Wukong goes through in three seconds, after licking the Jade Emperor's Golden Elixir. However this won't stop him from eating the entire bottle Out Of Spite.

The fight against Nezha is another core memory, because Nezha utterly mystified me. A child fighting among - and with - grownups felt out of place. I suspect because in any other story I'd encountered he'd be the Son Of The Emperor and a major storytelling element. Here he just shows up, gets beaten, and disappears again.

Kudos to Shanghai Animation Film Studio for giving their characters five fingers! I know the reason for four fingered characters, but - frankly - the shortcut sucks just as much as sliding feet in a walk cycle.

What makes Sun Wukong stand out as a trickster, at least in Shanghai Animation Studio's and CCTV's versions, is that he's kind. Most tricksters are 'base line kind', ie they reach the level of kindness we expect from anyone. Wukong likes being kind, and often takes delight in it.
