Whoever animated Erlang (here in the shape of a tiger - the one on top) definitely studied cats! That's one happy tiger!

Animator 1: Hey! By layering the cels we can create an Wukongception here!
Animator 2: What's that?
Animator 1 *suddenly remembering his oath as a time traveller*: Errr... I tried to use Latin to make it sound cooler. Stupid me! Let's call it lots'a Wukong instead.
Looks like 'it's not medicine if it doesn't taste bitter' is a thing in China too. This is one of several expressions Sun Wukong goes through in three seconds, after licking the Jade Emperor's Golden Elixir. However this won't stop him from eating the entire bottle Out Of Spite.
Edit: I was wrong, he liked it.
Woot! Bilibili has put Nobody on YouTube! If you can't get enough of Sun Wukong through my comments, head over and watch.
(I will not face the fact that my watch list just expanded to the Nth degree. Again. In fact, I'm _totally_ calm.
*falls over*)
Edit: it's only episode 1 - yes, I'm as disappointed as you are.

Oh? So it _can_ be tu di? That gives new fuel to my unhinged lingustic hypothising. Anyway, note that Wukong - freshly appointed guardian of the Imperial Mother's peach garden - has a stylised peach on his apron.

The fight against Nezha is another core memory, because Nezha utterly mystified me. A child fighting among - and with - grownups felt out of place. I suspect because in any other story I'd encountered he'd be the Son Of The Emperor and a major storytelling element. Here he just shows up, gets beaten, and disappears again.

Kudos to Shanghai Animation Film Studio for giving their characters five fingers! I know the reason for four fingered characters, but - frankly - the shortcut sucks just as much as sliding feet in a walk cycle.

What makes Sun Wukong stand out as a trickster, at least in Shanghai Animation Studio's and CCTV's versions, is that he's kind. Most tricksters are 'base line kind', ie they reach the level of kindness we expect from anyone. Wukong likes being kind, and often takes delight in it.
SVT, for some reason, did not subtitle this movie when they first broadcast it. Instead they had a wellknown actor and comedian narrate it - and he probably ad-libbed a lot. He said about this character* "Oh. That old man has cotton in his skirts!" Almost 50yrs later, and I still randomly go "What the _heck_ man!" at the memory
(*Great White Planet In The Sky according to the translation, The North Star according to my memory)
The guards parting the waterfall with their weapons is such an awesome detail! I was around 6yrs when I saw it first, and it immediately formed a core memory!
