@dangillmor
About time that one of these "you are the product" data selling tech cos. adopts the mission statement: "Be evil," rather than advertising just the opposite.

No panacea but I wld like to see a C-suite level Office of #ChiefEthicist in all of these companies (and in many more, as well) — to function independently, much like USG's Inspector General offices. It could help if developed wisely (lots of details to work out.)

@anildash
Good luck.

Q: Who is the Meta who shld be asking?
A: Leadership — if not corporate, then at division/operating level. But they're under the influence of corporate leadership. Problematic.

Unlikely that Meta will be introspective w/o regulatory oversight — they've proven that time & again. Something to consider — for Meta, other public cos., VC-backed cos., et al.: creation of an *independent* (that's important) C-Suite level Office of #ChiefEthicist. Not a panacea but won't hurt.

@kissane
Won't solve every problem — but may solve some and unlikely to worsen many: companies (maybe all, most definitely tech cos. & any that receive VC funding, think they want to go public someday, etc...) need an *independent*, C-Suite level Office of #ChiefEthicist. Independence means not controlled by CEO.

(Also, locking that phone in a cabinet = "social media sabbath." Bravo!!)

@manton Not disagreeing with you (but...) Observation: centrality = core principle of corporate commercial development — which is central to market capitalism, much of Silicon Valley, VCs, etc.

This wld not be a panacea, but I think that every company with even a glimmer of interest in going public/growing significant market share/etc. (not sure of all qualifying parameters but many, many companies) should have **independent** C-Suite level Office of #ChiefEthicist. Details TBD.

"Forget the Peter Principle: tech is ruled by the Sam Principle." 😂😭

Will not solve every problem with every company, enshittification-related or otherwise, but when I'm anointed dictator (or SEC Chair) every company with grandiose plans to go public, receive financing, take customer money... — i.e., every company — will need an independent, C-Suite level Office of #ChiefEthicist. Will operate like IGs in government.

Details TBD. It's a #GoodStart.

@jmcrookston Yes, how it works w/o affecting the art is interesting. Of note: "The team is also making Nightshade open source, which would allow others to tinker with it and make their own versions." Shld be possible to examine the code.

I think at all companies — all sectors, all sizes (certainly if going public or largescale growth is a goal) — need an independent, C-suite level Office of #ChiefEthicist (similar to IGs in USG). Not a panacea, but would not hurt. Details need to be worked out.

@evacide Some counter to the manifesto: All companies—all sectors, all sizes—& definitely any young company thinking of going public, growing beyond a single store front or office, with outside (esp. VC) investors, et al. need a C-Suite level Office of #ChiefEthicist. Needs to be independent, like USG OIG, out of reach of founders, CEOs, et al.
Not a panacea, but a start—a locus for various activities and issues.
Unintended bonus: new emphasis on #ethics training and university ethics programs.

@jackmjenkins @ai6yr The comparison between US and EU outcomes based on how they treat social media, etc. is one test. But rather than letting laissez faire be the only US rule, I would advocate for C-suite level (or something similar, depending on company size and potential impact) Office of #ChiefEthicist in all companies — all sectors here. Take at least some control away from CEO. Perfect? No, but something — and a start.
