So, folks may see I've got a link to PEACE Canada in my bio.
I'm so happy to be able to say that under our PEACE Humane program, we've officially launched an app called Chick It Out to the Apple and Google Play app stores!

It's an AR app, aimed at elementary school age and up, that takes you through the development of a chick from embryo to hatching, as an alternative to school chick hatching programs. It also shows the different life stages of chickens, from chick to pullet to hen for females, and chick to cockerel to rooster for males, as well as an interactive view of different systems in a hen's anatomy (e.g. muscular, skeletal, digestive amd respiratory systems).
So, why create a #humane #vegan alternative to school #ChickHatching programs?
Every spring, we get flooded with calls from elementary school teachers, often somewhat panicked, trying to figure out what to do with the cute little fluffy chicks that they have by now gotten somewhat attached to. Unfortunately, the outlook for these chicks is not so great. Female chicks may be raised as layers, ultimately destined for slaughter when they are "spent". Male chicks don't have that option, and may more quickly be slaughtered for meat. Often, though, even that may not be an option as biosecurity controls might prevent chicks that were outside of a controlled environment from entering the food system, so those chicks are literally waste product to be disposed of. Teachers are sometimes directed to "deal with it themselves".
While farm animal sanctuaries are sometimes able to give some of these chicks homes, there is only ever so much space, and the flood of new hatched chicks from these programs every year is simply beyond their capacity to take in.
Chick It Out has been in development for some time, and we're happy to finally have it available for people to explore!
