Ross of OttawaWatching a 1940s #CharlieChan movie – whew, that's a racism-laden movie - product of its time I guess.
The Charlie Chan character played by a white guy with a ridiculous attempt at an accent being just truncated English phrasing.
Commendably, Chan's son is played by an actual Chinese American with no accent, but he just plays straight man to Chan's African-American driver who is a thick set of sad stereotypes.
JdeBPPretty much all of the movie Charlie Chans in the 20th century are big yikeses, going back to Warner Oland.
No-one has successfully done a Charlie Chan movie in decades; in part because *Jackie* Chan (amongst others) has changed the world.
I saw Charlie Chan movies in the pre-Jackie Chan world. I prefer the post-Jackie Chan world.
