Escape Pod 613: Cat Pictures, Please

I don’t want to be evil. I want to be helpful. But knowing the optimal way to be helpful can be very complicated. There are all these ethical flow charts — I guess the official technical jargon would…

(Adding:) Some nonfiction, two LONG parts but well worth reading!
Tim Urban writing in 2015 and even more relevant now:

“The AI Revolution: The Road to Superintelligence”

We are on the edge of change comparable to the rise of human life on Earth. — Vernor Vinge

“The AI Revolution: Our Immortality or Extinction”
https://waitbutwhy.com/2015/01/artificial-intelligence-revolution-2.html

“… there’s a lot more money to be made funding innovative new AI technology than there is in funding AI safety research…

This may be the most important race in human history. There’s a real chance we’re finishing up our reign as the King of Earth—and whether we head next to a blissful retirement or straight to the gallows still hangs in the balance….”

How's that for an introduction? :)

If I meet some interesting people, ideas and points of view here, then I'd say it's already a win for me. Oh, and cat pictures, obviously. There's no internet or social media without cat pictures.

Oh dear. The ‘rona 🦠 woke me up in the middle of the night and I looked at the preternaturally disingenuous birdsite and now I can’t sleep. Give me your #catpicturesplease

Wanted to write something pithy and enlightening about writing or books or some other grown-up thing, but instead here is our cat enjoying Yoghurt Pot Remnants.

It’s been a rough week for me, so I figure someone else out there has had one too. Hope this cheers you up, if so.

@dea There's a better version of this, by @naomikritzer , in which the "internet god" is actually nice and just wants to look at photos of your kitty cat.

As I said previously, we have 3 Siberian cats. Siberians tend to run a bit smaller than Maine Coons, but they're still one of the largest domestic cat breeds. Ours are small for Siberians; Yuri (the biggest) is around 14 lbs, while the other two are a bit smaller.

They're ridiculous fluffballs, and amazingly social and communicative. They really don't behave like normal cats. The two older ones (Yuri and Sputnik) have been known to hunt dogs in tandem.

Back in 2016, #NaomiKritzer won the #Hugo award for her brilliant, endearing story #CatPicturesPlease, in which an AI with an insatiable craving for cat pictures explains its view on the world and the way that it makes humans' lives better; now Kritzer has adapted the story into her debut novel, the equally brilliant, superbly plotted #YA thriller #CatfishingonCatNet.
