It’s exactly 50 years to the day that the Kolchak : The Night Stalker series was first broadcast in the US.

As one of our favourite shows and wanting to mark the occasion, we rewatched the first episode, wrote a bit about it and also how we came across a 70s cult TV show only in the early 90s on the BBC in the UK.

50 Years Ago, the Most Important Sci-Fi Show You’ve Never Heard of Debuted

Carl Kolchak was an inspiration to me. A no-nonsense reporter stumbling across the supernatural and, instead of freaking out, just shrugging and hitting the library? That's my kind of protagonist.
He wasn't particularly bitter about the monsters, creatures, and critters he came across. To him, they were neither inherently good or evil. It was their actions that defined them. They were just often at the center of a good story.
And Darren McGavin played him with such bombast and gusto that it was hard not to root for him.
There have been novels and graphic novels for his further adventures, but he never caught on or received the recognition he deserved.
And, yes, he inspired the X-Files.

I've got both of these in a box somewhere. I really wish I could get my hands on them.

A show that started out with a TV movie, and then another, the series itself would ultimately choke to death with its reliance on a Monster of the Week format.
