Sinn Fein now saying that they won't re-run the family and care referenda, despite previous promises. What a bunch of populist twats; their policies just blow in the wind.

@ciaranmak If the Irish constitution language doesn't change with this referendum, the unions should argue that it's a woman's right to work remotely from their residence

2024 - Ireland votes

People will have many opportunities to vote in 2024. 8 March - a referendum on changing the constitutional definition of the family and a referendum on removing a thing in the constitution about a woman's place being in the home and replacing it with a new provision about how the state should help family members care for each other [both of these referendums were defeated] On a date to be decided but probably Friday 7 June: - elections to local authorities - elections to the European Parliament A general election to Dáil Éireann may take place in 2024 (but could also be held back until early 2025).

Admittedly, the Care Amendment doesn't achieve a non-sexist equivalent of what was intended in the current Article 41.2.2°. That would be that the State should endeavour to ensure that it is possible for one parent (either one) in a couple to choose not to work in the labour market, so that children would have more time with a parent.
That could be problematic too, since the parent who doesn't work would usually be the mother, but at least that's not in the wording.

Excellent article on the 2 referenda:

Care: "As with the previous article, the obligation placed on the State is weak [...however it is ...] a symbolic acknowledgement that we lead relational lives in which we are cared for and care for others within a broad range of familial settings. Stating this clearly in the Constitution signals that people are valued for who they are and not only as economic producers and consumers."

The Irish #Referendums:
The Care Referendum proposes to remove some out-dated (from 1937), well-meant, but sexist language from our Constitution. It would be embarrassing if it were defeated.

I think a lot of civic society groups jumped the gun by supporting yes/yes.

In relation to the upcoming referendum on the care amendment, it seems that many carers and people with disabilities are being ignored.

We would encourage people to search the hashtag #voteyesno to hear some of these voices.
