A #poll for people NOT using screen readers:

When you see a post with a picture attached, posted by someone you know writes good #MediaCaptions, do you usually:

A) Not check the caption, because you trust its good enough so you can boost the post with a clear conscience, if you like the post and picture.

B) Read the caption, because you want to make sure every time.

C) Read the caption, because you expect you will enjoy it more than just looking at the picture, or because you want to get inspired on how to write good captions.

D) Why would I care about captions? I can see!

I see so many people abusing the media description feature, so here is an irregular reminder of what you should do with the feature:

Describe the media!

I know, right? Its almost as though you could have guessed that yourself. Just describe the media in a way that people who can't see and/or hear it still get the gist.
Don't just write a teaser of the description and then leave out the most important part. That's just cruel!
If you can't write a media description ask for help by using the AltForMe hashtag and leave the field *empty* until you get a description that you can copy-paste in.

Abusing the media description feature tricks people into boosting your post, because they think everybody will be able to enjoy it.

Could we at least stop abusing the media caption feature?

Stop using the caption feature as a bonus character limit for your post!
Stop putting only media credits in the caption!

If you can't write a caption (atm) use the hashtag AltForMe. If you can't be bothered to write a caption, leave it the fuck empty!

#CaptionYourMedia

PS: And what's with putting hashtags in the caption? It's not like they do, what hashtags are supposed to do, when put there.

@ellesaurus Or your can follow @PleaseCaption and they will nudge you every time you pay an image or video without a caption. #AltText #CaptionYourMedia #captionyourimages

(people on mastodon are more likely to boost your uploads if you add captions) #captionyourmedia

If you follow @PleaseCaption the bot will bug you every time you upload something without captions.

Caption for this would be something like: Drawing of a woman on violet sheets, with a moaning expression, and penetrating herself with a blue dildo.

That's it :)
