The #CanadianOperaCompany has announced its 2026/27 season. https://www.coc.ca/tickets/2627-season While I'd note this will make it four seasons without any #Wagner, I'm particularly looking forward to #BenjaminBritten's The Turn of the Screw, and a new opera, Empire of Wild, music by composer Ian Cusson and libretto by the novelist Cherie Dimaline.

#Opera

To get away from doomscrolling for a moment, last night we saw a fabulous performance by the #CanadianOperaCompany of a wonderful new opera by Québec composer Julien Bilodeau: La Reine Garçon. A very strong cast was supported by great playing by the COC orchestra under Johannes Debus.

La Reine-garçon

Queen Christine of Sweden was raised as a boy by her father during a period of extraordinary change. At the height of the Scientific Revolution, she employed the philosopher René Descartes as her tutor, sparking an intellectual and spiritual transformation of massive historical significance.

We've heard Oksana Lyniv conduct the #TorontoSymphonyOrchestra and Speranza Scappucci lead several great #CanadianOperaCompany productions ( most recently #Verdi Macbeth in 2023.) Great to see talent getting recognized! #ClassicalMusic

Four women conductors lead the Met Opera in one week – in historic first

Since its inception in the early 1880s up until just a few years ago, the Met Opera had only hosted four women to conduct. Two weeks ago, four trailblazing women turned this pattern on its head – all of them conducting the Met in one landmark week.

The Canadian Opera Company has announced its 2023-24 season. I have to say I'm underwhelmed. While it will be interesting to hear Sondra Radvanovsky in Medea, and it looks like the Fidelio and Don Giovanni are new productions (having seen the previous ones, thank goodness), this line up gives me the impression of a Company in artistic and perhaps finanical stasis. And La Bohème again (2013, 2019, next year)? More war horses.
