Managed a quick visit to Silchester to walk a section of the Roman walls yesterday. The Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum was later abandoned rather than being redeveloped, so the archaeological record is impressive and both the fortified walls and amphitheatre are still present

The town of Calleva was originally a Celtic Iron Age settlement. Still, it was settled by the Romans until the 5th century, when the town was abandoned, possibly due to attacks by the population of nearby Dorchester-upon-Thames. After the wells were filled in, the town was abandoned and forgotten for centuries.
