Visited Calleva, near Silchester in Hampshire. The old Roman walls are visible around what remains of the town, still very high in some places. A good tow to three metres in height, combined with what would have been a trench on the far side would have been daunting to try to climb. 100 acres of town, buried under the soil, waiting to be excavated again.

Walking around the south wall, we found this spectacular old yew tree growing out of the top of the wall.

The town of Calleva was originally a Celtic Iron Age settlement. Still, it was settled by the Romans until the 5th century, when the town was abandoned, possibly due to attacks by the population of nearby Dorchester-upon-Thames. After the wells were filled in, the town was abandoned and forgotten for centuries.
