Thanks to a thread by @ai6yr on digital calipers (and how leaky batteries kill them), I checked my own calipers I hadn't used in a year and found the battery had started leaking.

Caught it in time, all it needed was a q-tip with a little vinegar to get rid of the battery juice. Still works, but now I'm storing the new battery next to the caliper in the same box.

Second new tool. A set of analog calipers. No digital readout, because those take batteries and I don't ever want to have to replace batteries if I can avoid it. This thing might not be THE most precise, but precise enough for me and it will work for as long as I live. Maybe.

I bought a set of machinists tools at a garage sale this morning. They are a bit rusty and dirty so I’m cleaning them up with some WD40. This is the “before” photo. I’m going slowly and being gentle so the after might take a while to mainfest.
