Die CTBTO ist die Organisation zur Überwachung des Internationalen Kernwaffenteststopp-Vertrags. Sie ist darauf ausgerichtet, weltweit geheime Kernwaffentests aufzuspüren und überwacht die Einhaltung des Vertrages.

Station Schauinsland: Geschichte und Aufgaben
1946 begannen Forschende der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität in Freiburg damit, im Schwarzwald auf dem Schauinsland Experimente zur Charakterisierung der kosmischen Höhenstrahlung durchzuführen. 1953 gelang es ihnen erstmals, Fallout eines Kernwaffentests in Niederschlagsproben nachzuweisen. 1957 nahm auf dem Schauinsland eine feste Messstation den Betrieb auf, um die Atmosphäre langfristig lückenlos auf künstliche und natürliche Radioaktivität zu überwachen. 1989 wurde sie in das neu gegründete BfS integriert und ihr Aufgabenspektrum kontinuierlich erweitert. Heute ist die Station auch Teil des internationalen Messnetzes zur Überwachung des UN-Abkommens zum Kernwaffen-Teststopp.

If a nuclear weapon is tested anywhere in the world, a global monitoring system run by the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty organisation will detect it. Macquarie Island plays a key role in that network.
