Looking back to the Creative Commons Summit what struck me most was how important open knowledge and culture is, now more than ever.

Reflections on the 2023 CC Global Summit

CC Australia Co-Lead Elliott Bledsoe shares insights from the 2023 Creative Commons Global Summit.

CC Australia

Looks like I brought home more than memories from #CCSummit2023

Wore a mask most of the time, but not while in personal conversations or during meals. Hard to imagine how I can enjoy a conference without getting sick, honestly.

#CovidIsNotOver

Another takeaway from the Creative Commons Global Summit: Absolutely no discussion of fediverse/ActivityPub 🤔

Seems like a huge omission for a community focused on commons, DIY, and media independence.

Instead it was all about AI, which was seriously off-topic, but where the money is these days.

Spent the final day asking people why and planting seeds, at least. Hope we can get the open culture scene thriving in the open social sphere! 🫡

#CCSummit2023

It was great to meet up with some @globalvoices comrades at #CCSummit2023! Global Voices has been producing 100% Creative Commons world news since 2005!

🌱 The @creativecommons #CCSummit2023 may be coming to an end, but CC work, networking, and relationship building continues!

My main takeaway from the lawyers in charge of the @creativecommons #CCSummit2023, an event (un)surprisingly focused on AI, is that they don’t think Creative Commons licenses have anything to do with AI.

Using a work as AI training data doesn’t republish it, so licenses aren’t triggered. They think it’s all “fair use”, and that’s where the legal questions arise.

I’m inclined to agree. Unless you can prove the model outputs the original work, copyright is irrelevant.
