DeSantis signs law giving Florida officials power to label terrorist groups
Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a law allowing Florida leaders to label groups as domestic or foreign terrorist organizations. The law, signed Monday, lets a top official at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement designate groups as terrorist organizations, with approval from the governor and state cabinet. Once labeled, groups can be dissolved and lose state funding. Students who support the groups can be expelled from state schools. Universities must report expelled students on visas to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Critics, including PEN America, argue the law's vague language could restrict education and target student protesters. They warn it may chill education and free speech in Florida.
