El otro día, los resultados del último barómetro de Hábitos de Lectura y Compra de Libros 2024 nos volvían a confirmar que la población joven es la más lectora del país, siendo el tramo de edad entre 14 y 24 años el que más lee en su tiempo libre.
En mis tiempos del viejo Twitter, estadísticas parecidas salían de vez en cuando, provocando la incredulidad de no pocos docentes parroquianos de las discusiones habituales del #claustrovirtual. Mi postura en relación a este tema siempre ha sido muy clara:
Si bien es cierto que hay muchos jóvenes (y mayores) que no tocan un libro ni con un palo, en general hoy en día los jóvenes (y mayores) leen muchísimo más que antes.
No hace falta que lo justifique, pues las estadísticas lo confirman, como vemos año tras año.
Apartado ya hace meses del debate educativo, cosa que agradezco, me topo en Mastodon con este fantástico toot de Mario, que ahonda sublimemente en este enfoque, al tiempo que añade unas interesantes perspectivas. Cito textualmente:
- […] Ello no va en contra de tener una posición crítica hacia el evidente sobre-uso de aparatos electrónicos.
- […] se trata más bien de hacer sentir reconocidas y vistas a todas las personas jóvenes y niñes que sí que les gusta leer y que dedican su tiempo libre/de ocio a ello.
- […] A veces nosotros mismos construimos un panorama que en realidad no es completamente cierto, o que por lo menos invisibiliza campos y formas de vida que de hecho están ahí, y ello contribuye a que muchas personas se sientan en algunos casos desoladas, raras o aisladas.
Leyendo los anteriores fragmentos, considero muy interesante el abordaje que hace Mario desde la óptica de no ‘hacer sentir raras o aisladas’ a las personas que sí leen, que son muchísimas, tal y como nos transmiten los resultados del barómetro. En este post no hablaremos de la importancia de la salud mental en la adolescencia, y su posible conexión con este asunto.
Interesante exhortación nos hace Mario al final de su toot. Nada más y nada menos que a la lucha por nuestros derechos:
[…] Quizá deberíamos dejar de prestar tanta atención y esfuerzos a criticar a la «nueva juventud» y empezar a luchar por una jornada laboral y una reparticion del trabajo doméstico que permita a las trabajadoras y trabajadores dedicar tiempo a la lectura.

Me ha sorprendido y parecido interesante este barómetro y noticia. Las personas jóvenes de 14 a 24 años son las que más leen de España. Creo que es importante recordarlo para cuando sin querer hacemos afirmaciones generacionales demasiado deprisa y prejuiciosamente: "los jóvenes de hoy en día...", "estan todos abducidos por el móvil", etc. Ello no va en contra de tener una posición crítica hacia el evidente sobre-uso de aparatos electrónicos en niños o hacia la dependencia y adiccion extendida a los móviles: se trata más bien de hacer sentir reconocidas y vistas a todas las personas jóvenes y niñes que sí que les gusta leer y que dedican su tiempo libre/de ocio a ello. La mayoría de comentarios a esta noticia, de hecho, son del tipo: "eso nadie se lo cree", "en serio? Si no tienen ni idea del idioma que hablan", "eso es porque se lo envian en el instituto", "no es verdad", etc. A veces nosotros mismos construimos un panorama que en realidad no es completamente cierto, o que por lo menos invisibiliza campos y formas de vida que de hecho estan ahí, y ello contribuye a que muchas personas se sientan en algunos casos desoladas, raras o aisladas. Por otro lado, la otra cuestión de la noticia que me parece sumamente importante: las personas que menos leen son normalmente mujeres y personas de mediana edad, la mayoría por falta de tiempo. Eso sí que es desolador. A friend had a long stay in a hospital recently, so I didn’t have as much walking around as usual. I did see an unusual toilet in their hospital room, though, which inspired today’s Sidewalk Friends sketch: The Astronaut Cyclops.

I brought home an old Lenovo workstation from work to eventually use as my home server, and am playing around with Lubuntu for the first time. I’m used to working at home with a single board Linux laptop and Raspberry Pis for servers, so working with Linux on a desktop again is feeling very speedy.

I first posted on the fediverse back in 2018 on a mastodon.social account.
Before long I set up a server of my own with masto.host.
In 2023 the increasing cost of using a hosting provider prompted me to host my own Akkoma server on a Raspberry Pi. Mastodon is too inefficient to work well on cheap hardware so I went with a lighter alternative.
This week I picked up a Lenovo Workstation at my work that was being retired and set it up to be my new server at home. I decided to go back to using Mastodon again with the more capable hardware in my closet.
Each time I moved my posts didn’t come with me. It’s still weird to me that migration hasn’t been elegantly solved on the fediverse. I keep a digest of things I post and boost on the fediverse at my blog: social
