On #ThisDayInHistory in 1925, #JohnScopes was arrested for teaching organic #evolution, in violation of state law, starting the infamous #MonkeyTrial. As late as 1967 the #ButlerAct was still law in Tennessee, perhaps helping to explain generations of #science #ignorance there.

The #ButlerAct was signed into law in #Tennessee on #ThisDayInHistory in 1925. It explicitly forbade public school teachers from denying the book of #Genesis account of human origins and banned the teaching of #evolution. The denial of observed facts to preserve myth is idiotic.
