This is a good piece by Lorcan Sirr on the dysfunction in our Building Control System and the fact that despite Priory Hall (and many more like it), despite the pyrite scandal and despite the mica scandal, we still have a self-certification system.

And what inspections we do have are woefully inadequate. There are 58 (full time equivalent) Building Control Officers across the whole country, by comparison there are 72 dog wardens.

Our Building Control system has been so dysfunctional for so many years we don't even recognise it when, for once, it is operating as it should.

We don't know the extent of the issue here but a Building Control officer inspecting a site to enforce compliance is a feature of any functional Building Control system and is commonplace in most jurisdictions. That it doesn't happen here very often is evident by the fact that this story is making the news.

Almost all of these are excellent recommendations by the #GrenfellReport. Review of #BuildingControl functions is 1 of more equivocal ones; I’d love to see an end to private sector “approved inspectors” but it would be a sad& unnecessary centralisation to see Local Authority Building Control role replaced by a single National Govt body https://t.co/ovUxg5hyMj?ssr=true
No fresh recommendations for social landlords following Grenfell Inquiry report

The Grenfell Tower Inquiry has made no fresh recommendations for social landlords in its Phase 2 report.

Inside Housing
Do you live in a low-rise (~4 stories) block in the UK built before 1970? Is your landlord planning to construct additional floors? The Government exempted developments of up to two floors from planning, but they are unlikely to meet safety requirements for wind-loading and disproportionate collapse. Feel free to ask me questions.

"it is time an independent building control authority is established in Ireland"

It should have happened in 1990 when Pádraig Flynn introduced the first Building Control Act (as a direct result of the Stardust disaster).

It should have happened in 2013 when Phil Hogan brought in the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations in response to Priory Hall and the pyrite scandal.

It must happen now.
