Bridget Jones statue becomes permanent resident of Leicester Square: ‘She makes Londoners feel seen’

Extension of three-year lifespan for bronze coincides with 25th anniversary rerelease of original romcom

I wouldn't necessarily classify 'Bridget Jones's Diary' among my favourite films, or genres, but this remains one of my favourite movie scenes in general, because of how simple and human it feels. I don't think that you can hold any sort of genuine affection towards someone, at any level not just romantic, and ask them to leave the messy, unpolished, anxious, neurodivergent, quirky or sad parts of themselves at the door and only show up as a curated persona that isn't even real.

It's a rare grounded moment, in a genre that very often bases entire plots on the "you should change yourself and fit this surface-level list of criteria in order to be deserving of love" trope.

Somehow I'd never seen this, which surprised me. But it's a charming little delight of a film, anchored by top-notch performances. My ★★★½ review of Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) on @letterboxd: https://boxd.it/9aQ50r #Comedy #RomCom #BridgetJonesDiary #Letterboxd
A ★★★½ review of Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)

It honestly kind of surprised me to realize that I’d never seen Bridget Jones’s Diary before now. Somehow in my mind I had definitely watched this little rom-com adaptation of Helen Fielding’s book (to be fair, I did see Bridget Jones’s Baby at some point, though I remember little about it). Alas, this is indeed my first-time watch and I have to admit I was charmed by it. Renée Zellweger makes an enjoyable protagonist in this film and while some of the VERY early 2000s awkward humor made me cringe, that’s the film’s intent and it didn’t come off too
