FILM REVIEW - THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2
🌍 where: cinema
🗒️ for: n/a
🖊️ score: 5/10

i had heard good things about this movie and i came into it, not with high expectations, but at least the expectation that it would be fun but still be meaningful. unfortunately i think this movie leaves a lot to be desired. i think there's a good movie in here, but it's not the one we got

the original movie is incredible - the cast is fantastic, the story is lean and focused on andy's foray into the fashion world and more high-end culture and how that impacts her personal life and her ambitions, etc. i'll give the writers props for avoiding retreading this story, rehashing all of the plot points and making this sequel a pointless remake. they clearly tried to make this its own thing.

the problem is that i think the writing is too messy - they want it to be fun and have callbacks and references and bring all the cast back together at runway, but then they also want to have it be a commentary on the death and enshittification of journalism and art and culture and fashion. in my opinion, you can't do both, and that's why this felt like a mess. andy starts off being fired and we want to see justice for her and her journalist colleagues that we never see in the end. we see the weaponisation of ai against miranda which never leads to anything. we see the sensationalisation of the internet which is only commented on once or twice. the movie itself looks worse than its predecessor. it barely touches on the future of the fashion industry.

the relationship in the first movie is also an important part of the plot and of andy's arc - as she adopts more of the culture of the rich, she pushes away her boyfriend (who also unfairly judges her and isnt the good guy either) and she also has that relationship with that other richer guy that doesn't end well. its important because its part of how she grows into her own person with her own convictions that takes her away from fashion and into journalism. in this movie, the romance is entirely unnecessary, shoehorned in, completely unrelevant to the plot, and should have been cut. it serves literally no purpose within the plot

and honestly the most unfulfilling part of this movie is the ending. andy, miranda, and nigel end the movie learning nothing, in the same position they were in before, doing nothing differently, with no character growth, and the solution to all of their problems was to simply find a rich person who doesn't devalue art. its a cheap and easy route to take, and really encapsulates how badly this script needed several revisions

despite this, i still had fun! its a fun, feel good movie. i just cant help but be disappointed in the several directions they went in because they didn't commit to anything, nothing happens, no-one learns anything, and they end up saying nothing. basically a nothingburger of a movie.

The beloved character actor says that his interest in hosting a food-centric program accelerated, ironically, when he couldn't eat at all due to treatment for oral cancer: "It was a really scary time. I lost 30 pounds. I could barely walk. You're on morphine for a while because the pain in your mouth is so excrutiating. It was horrible."
