El ex bróker sudafricano analiza en su libro ‘Cloud Money’ cómo los pagos digitales nos conducen a una sociedad en la que las grandes tecnológicas asumirán un poder “jamás visto en la historia”

Los pagos con tarjeta le están comiendo poco a poco el terreno al dinero en efectivo. Detrás de esa silenciosa transición hacia un mundo sin monedas ni billetes hay algo más que comodidad: el sistema financiero y las grandes tecnológicas buscan ampliar su cuota de poder. Eso sostiene el antropólogo y activista financiero Brett Scott en su libro Cloud Money, que Debate acaba de publicar en castellano. Controlar la infraestructura de pagos y la información sobre las transacciones es la última frontera que le queda por traspasar a las Big Tech. Y vamos derechos hacia allá.

“El dinero en efectivo es capitalista y al mismo tiempo limita la expansión del capitalismo”, sostiene este sudafricano nacido en Durban hace 40 años. Los pagos digitales aportan información muy valiosa que no solo pueden aumentar la vigilancia sobre la población, sino que aportan pistas a las empresas para conocer mejor a los clientes y ofrecerles nuevos servicios. Tras estudiar Antropología, Scott se mudó a Londres para trabajar como bróker. Vivir la crisis de 2008 desde los rascacielos de la City le hizo cambiar el paso. Empezó a colaborar con ONG, artistas y a investigar la intersección entre el sistema financiero y la tecnología, tema sobre el que ha escrito tres libros y un informe para la ONU, que en 2016 le pidió que explorara el potencial de blockchain y las criptomonedas.
