Osage oranges. Hedge apples. Horse apples. Monkey balls.

Native to s-central US, they've been planted all over as a hedge & firewood. The wood is uniquely hard, strong, and flexible. Its lumber is naturally weather-durable. Prized by bowyers for making the finest bows.

The fruit arrives toward the end of summer. In the old days, folks would cut these in half & place them around the house to repel cockroaches, ants, & spiders. We just think they are cool!

I wanted to see if my arrow-speed-by-sound calculations were correct (audio + Audacity + math), and when compared to a commercial chronograph, it looks like I'm pretty accurate!

My commercial recurve bow shoots right around 134 feet per second when using my 540 grain arrows.

New bow I made! This one is a 70” Black Locust contact recurve. It’s pulling 45# at 28”.

This recurve bow is turning out much better than expected. This thing was basically in proper tiller just from the initial roughout. Even after turning the tips and getting it straightened out, it barely needed any additional work.

I feel like I'm the luckiest bowyer to ever carve a stick!

Straightening the lateral dimension of the recurve bow. Lots of clamping, wedging, and heat-treating with a heat gun.

Steam bending, phase #1 (make it look cool) complete. Phase #2 (make it function) will have to wait a couple of days while the wood rehydrates after the steam bending treatment.

Experimenting with some steam bending. I’m trying to build a 70” black locust recurve bow. Fingers crossed!

Almost complete. This is a 70" pacific yew bow that I've carved, and it's currently pulling 40 pounds at a 25" draw.
It looks like it's doing what it's supposed to be doing.

Buddy of mine took some of the extra Pacific Yew I had from making bows and turned it into a few bowls. Cute! I love it.
