Awesome day birding around RSPB Lakenheath Fen, and then (eventually, thanks to a road closure) dropping in to the “swan feed” at WWT Welney Washes.

Did I see anything “good” you ask? Well, I say, I saw many amazing flappy things, including lots of Marsh Harriers, two Common Cranes, and a Bittern (pictured).

A perfectly camouflaged Eurasian Bittern blends into the golden reeds, while a curious Common Moorhen strolls by the water’s edge. Nature’s art of hiding in plain sight. 🌾🦤✨

A couple of (nearly 19 year) old digiscoped pictures of Bittern. Vignetting because camera's sensor was too big. First you see him/her, then you don't (at least if you don't look carefully).

Being abĺe to find Bitterns deep in reedbeds transformed my sightings ftom rare moments of seredipity, to sufficient regularity that I once took my father to the hide to see one.
