Awesome day birding around RSPB Lakenheath Fen, and then (eventually, thanks to a road closure) dropping in to the “swan feed” at WWT Welney Washes.

Did I see anything “good” you ask? Well, I say, I saw many amazing flappy things, including lots of Marsh Harriers, two Common Cranes, and a Bittern (pictured).

Today’s weekend waterbird is a great egret. It is not a mediocre egret, and it is also not a duck.

I’m really bad at getting pictures of birds in flight, so was quite pleased with this shot when I was at Welney.

Took my mind off things with a visit to WWT Welney this morning. A couple of photos and brief thoughts with links to oh-so-exciting BirdTrack lists at https://occasionalducks.com/2025/09/14-september-2025-wwt-welney

A nice morning at Welney. Getting there before it opened I did a fairly decent car park list (also including walking up to the top of the levée) of

On the way to the coast, we called in at WWT Welney. There was a handful of Whooper Swan from the main hide. They were very near the hide so we could see the yellow bill markings.
